What causes skin redness & flushing?
Common causes include:
- Sun damage. This is mostly on the face but for many people is also very noticeable on the neck and chest.
- Keratosis pilaris – this occurs in younger people and if often associated with rough skin on the sides of the cheeks and upper arms.
Often it can be a combination of these problems. Many people can see tiny red blood vessels which become visible over time – these are called capillaries and when large and dilated are often called “broken capillaries” or “cuperose”. The medical term is telangiectasia. They are most common on the cheeks and around the nose.
Some people have flushing as their main problem without persistent redness. Often they can benefit from medical therapies (oral medications) combined with laser treatment.
