Frequently asked questions

Skin cancer develops when your cells are damaged by UV radiation (usually through sun exposure) and grow uncontrollably. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, probably due to our powerful sunshine and love of the outdoors.

The three primary types of skin cancer include:

  1. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, often appearing as a translucent lump or scaly patch.
  2. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): Can appear as red, crusted lesions and may spread if left untreated.
  3. Melanoma: The most dangerous type, typically identified as an irregular, changing mole or pigmented lesion.

If a skin lesion shows signs of asymmetry, irregular borders, colour changes, or growth, it requires prompt evaluation. Early detection of skin cancer significantly improves treatment success.

At our Skin Cancer Clinic, we use evidence-based diagnostic techniques, including:

  • Full-body skin checks: A thorough skin examination to identify potential concerns.
  • Dermatoscopy: A close examination of lesions using a magnification tool.

Biopsy: If a lesion is suspicious, we take a sample for laboratory analysis.

Our clinic offers a range of treatments tailored to the type, size, and location of skin cancer.

These include:

  • Surgical excision: Removing cancerous tissue with a small margin of healthy skin. This is a common treatment for BCCs, SCCs, and early melanomas.
  • Cryotherapy: Freezing superficial skin cancers using liquid nitrogen.
  • Topical treatments: Prescription creams for superficial BCCs.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT): Using light and photosensitive cream to target abnormal skin cells.
  • Advanced options: For complex cases, treatments like Mohs surgery ensure precision removal with minimal healthy tissue loss.

Early detection could save your life. Whether you’re concerned about a specific lesion or due for a routine skin check, we’re here to help.

Our clinic recommends annual skin checks.

Our skin check appointments are usually between 20-30 minutes.
