Why should I see a Dermatologist for my acne?

Acne is the most common of all skin conditions. It causes physical discomfort and can affect your self-esteem and confidence. People of all ages and skin types suffer from acne. Fortunately it is a very treatable and mostly curable condition.

The dermatologists at Complete Skin Specialists have over 20 years combined experience in the effective treatment of acne. We understand that because there are a variety of acne types every patient’s treatment regime must be individualised  A treatment regime developed by a dermatologist provides the best chance of effective management. At Complete Skin Specialists we offer dedicated acne clinics which provide convenient appointment times for all our patients including school age patients.

Unfortunately there are many myths about what causes acne and how to treat it. As doctors, dermatologists understand the causes of acne and are expert in the medical treatment of acne. We can combine both prescription medication with other treatment options such as extractions, peels and light based therapies to create an effective treatment plan for every situation. Having clear skin need not be expensive or frustrating if you have the correct expert advice and management. In many cases, after the medicare rebate, the out of pocket cost of a six month course of treatment, including prescriptions, may be as little as $350, with no further treatment required.

Acne Scarring

Although acne is often considered to be just a “cosmetic” issue, it can result in permanent scarring. Acne can also severely affects ones self-esteem and can continue for years or lifelong in some individuals if untreated. Even the most severe acne, however, is usually treatable and early intervention is recommended to prevent or minimize long term scarring. Fortunately, if scarring has occurred it can be treated in a number of ways. A consultation is required to discuss which treatment options are most suitable for any given individual because acne-scarring can varies significantly in type and severity.

Fractional Resurfacing Laser

Fractional resurfacing is a new technology allowing the scarred skin to be safely “damaged” with subsequent repair resulting in rebuilding of the normal skin, and permanent smoothing of scarring. Although this laser technology is not currently offered at Complete Skin Specialists, both Dr Belinda Welsh and Dr Cara McDonald are able to treat patients at other clinic locations in Carlton and South Yarra, respectively.

Dermal Fillers

Certain types of acne scarring will improve greatly with the use of dermal fillers. In most people with scarring there is also significant loss of the fat layer under the skin. This causes the scarring to look more severe. Replacement of this volume loss can also dramatically improve the overall appearance. As well as this, individual depressed scars can be raised and flattened out using fillers. Although hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent, then effects are generally long lasting and treatment only needs to be repeated every 1-2 years.

Surgical procedures

Some scars are most amenable to minor surgical procedures. Procedures for scarring include excision, punch elevations and subcision. These can be discussed in detail at your consultation if required.
