Pigment/ Sun Damage Laser

Have you seen a change in skin colour? It may be pigmentation.

Pigmentation

About Pigmentation

Pigmentation refers to changes in skin colour due to the amount of melanin produced by the body. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin, hair, and eyes, and it also helps protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) light.

Skin pigmentation conditions occur when the body produces either too much melanin (hyperpigmentation) or too little melanin (hypopigmentation).

  • Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin becomes darker than usual. This can appear as dark patches, freckles, sunspots, or conditions such as melasma – a common type of pigmentation that appears as blotchy brown patches, often on the face.
  • Hypopigmentation happens when the skin becomes lighter due to a lack of melanin.

While pigmentation itself is not harmful, it can affect confidence and may be a sign of underlying skin concerns.

Several factors can contribute to changes in skin pigmentation, including:

  • Sun exposure – UV radiation stimulates melanin production, leading to freckles, sunspots, and uneven skin tone.
  • Hormonal changes – Conditions such as pregnancy or hormonal imbalances can trigger melasma and other pigmentation issues.
  • Genetics – Some pigmentation conditions, like birthmarks or freckles, are inherited.
  • Skin inflammation or injury – Acne scars, burns, or cuts can sometimes leave behind darker patches of skin.

Protecting your skin from the sun and following a tailored skincare routine can help manage pigmentation concerns.

The right treatment for pigmentation depends on the type and cause of the pigmentation. Treatment options include:

  1. Skincare and topical treatments
  • Prescription creams – Ingredients like hydroquinone and retinoic acid can help lighten dark spots and even skin tone. These are prescribed by dermatologists for short-term use.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Helps to reduce pigmentation and prevent new spots from forming. It is gentle and suitable for long-term use alongside other treatments.
  • Sunscreen – Daily sun protection is essential to prevent further pigmentation and maintain results from treatments.
  1. Skin peels and facials
  • Enzyme Reactivation Peels – These treatments help remove dead skin cells, lifting accumulated melanin and promoting a more even skin tone.
  • Targeted skin peels – Peels can be customised to address different concerns, including pigmentation, acne, and fine lines.
  1. Laser treatments

Laser therapy is a highly effective option for certain types of pigmentation, such as:

  • Sunspots, freckles, and age spots
  • Café-au-lait spots (light brown birthmarks)
  • Melasma (in some cases, depending on severity and skin type)

At Complete Skin Specialists, we use advanced laser technology, including the Candela GMax Pro laser, which delivers safe and effective results. Most patients require 2–3 initial treatments, followed by occasional maintenance treatments to maintain an even skin tone.
