School formal season is fast approaching! It’s always a fun time of year, although it’s even more enjoyable when we feel our best. Feeling your best can often be closely linked to looking your best, without any fears or anxieties. It’s not about vanity, but more so about empowerment and the way you feel within yourself.

At Complete Skin Specialists, we understand the implications that your skin’s appearance can have on your self-esteem, which is why we not only treat skin conditions, but help our patients achieve their best and healthiest skin for them.

How early before formal should I start preparing my skin?

Although long term management and a good skincare regime is the best way to maintain healthy skin, when preparing for your school formal we recommend that you begin preparing the skin 2-3 months before the event.

This doesn’t have to be a lengthy regime, but general cleansing practices, paired with a balanced diet, are a great starting point for achieving that pre-formal ‘glow’.

What is the best way to ensure my skin is clear for formal?

Reducing your intake of high sugar food and avoiding excessive amounts of dairy may help some people. Similarly, minimising stress where possible may reduce inflammation in the body. Avoiding irritation of the skin can also reduce inflammation and acne lesions, so if you’re prone to acne, try not to over-cleanse or use harsh products on the skin. These types of products are usually counter-productive and can actually cause an increase in oil production and skin cell turnover resulting in more blocking of the pores and more acne. That’s definitely not what you want before your school formal!

When it comes to finding the right products, they should always be anti-inflammatory (including ingredients such as niacinamide) and gently exfoliating (AHAs and BHAs) to help unblock the pores. Products with topical vitamin A (also known as retinoids) will help reduce the formation of blocked pores and reprogram cellular function, keeping our skin healthy.

To ensure that your skin is clear in the lead up to your formal, we also recommend avoiding heavy makeup and oils (in particular mineral oils), especially if your skin is prone to congestion and blocked pores.

What treatments would you recommend in the lead up to my formal?

Professional acne and comedones extractions can improve your skin by reducing the inflamed pimples caused by the blackheads and improve the texture and tone of your skin. If you have problematic skin, an extraction treatment is the most effective way to begin a treatment plan, because it helps to clear the skin of any existing comedones and pustular inflammation.

If you’re all about achieving glowing skin, our customised skin peels help to strengthen the skin by enzymatically exfoliating the damaged surface layer of the skin. This stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture, softness, superficial blemishes and uneven skin tone. The benefits of the enzymes we use are that they can be layered on the skin to maximise their effectiveness and address more than one skin concern at the same time.

Skin peels can be performed anywhere from 2-4 weeks apart for the first 6 treatments, and then maintenance peels can be performed every few months or as needed. You can expect your skin to look and feel amazing directly after your first peel.

The final treatment we recommend for formal-ready skin is LED light treatment. It’s a non-invasive treatment that helps to promote healing and rejuvenate the skin without any downtime. It works on the basic premise that different light colours deliver concentrated light and penetrate the skin at different depths, which in turn triggers a reaction within the skin cells without the risk of trauma or thermal damage. Blue light is generally used to kill bacteria in acneic skins reducing breakouts whereas the red light is used more to aid with healing and stimulate collagen production. LED light treatment can be performed as frequent as once or twice a week as there is no downtime associated with this treatment.
